Háifoss waterfall is one of Iceland’s lesser-known yet beautiful waterfalls, situated in the Þjórsárdalur valley, off the beaten track from the more popular tourist routes. But that doesn’t mean it’s any less beautiful! Visiting Haifoss means getting away from the crowds and enjoying a more immersive experience in nature. This guide provides information on accessing Haifoss waterfall by car, including driving conditions, parking, and hiking options.

About Haifoss Waterfall

Haifoss is a high waterfall located in the Þjórsárdalur valley in the Iceland Highlands. Its name translates to “High Falls,” and it definitely lives up to that name as the drop is 122 meters (400 feet), which makes it one of the highest waterfalls in Iceland.

The water plunges down into a gorgeous, green canyon and is part of a large river system, with the River Fossá feeding into Þjórsá River, the longest river in Iceland. Haifoss is relatively close to Hekla, one of Iceland’s most active volcanoes, which is visible from the waterfall viewpoint.

Where Is It? How to Get to Haifoss? How Far from Haifoss Waterfall to Reykjavik?

Haifoss Waterfall is situated in the Southern part of Iceland’s Highlands. It’s about 140 kilometers (87 miles) from Reykjavik, the capital city of Iceland, and the drive typically takes around two hours, depending on  Iceland road conditions. The most direct road leading to Haifoss is via the Route 1 Ring Road heading east, followed by Route 32, which leads you toward the Þjórsárdalur Valley.

The final stretch, which is about 7.5 kilometers (4.6 miles), involves driving on gravel roads, so be prepared for a bit of adventure! Turn left after the marked signpost to find the car park. Once you reach the parking lot, you can hike to the bottom of the waterfall on a trail that’s about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) long and takes about 1.5 hours. The hike is moderate in difficulty, with steep and unsteady parts, but it’s worth the effort.

When Is the Best Time to Visit with a Car?

The best time to visit Haifoss by car is during the summer months, from June to September, when the weather is milder, and the roads are more accessible. While the route to Haifoss does not require traversing any Iceland F-roads, winter travel can be challenging due to snow and ice, making the gravel roads particularly treacherous.

Can You Go to Haifoss in Winter?

Yes, you can visit Haifoss in winter, but it can be a challenge as Iceland’s weather is notoriously unpredictable and the gravel stretch isn’t well maintained. Temporary road closures due to snowstorms or icy conditions are not uncommon in this area, so always make sure to check the Iceland weather forecast via vedur.is and road information via road.is before you start driving out to the waterfall.

How are the Driving Conditions?

The drive to Haifoss includes driving on rough and uneven gravel roads, so you need to drive carefully, especially when it’s wet. The drive is still manageable, but it’s not a straightforward as driving on paved highways.

Spring (April – May): During the spring, the melting snow can make the gravel roads muddy and slippery. It’s important to use a vehicle with good traction, like 4×4 vehicles, to handle potentially soft roadbeds. Potholes are common, so keep your speed moderate and watch the road ahead carefully.

Summer (June – August): This is the ideal time to visit Haifoss. The roads are usually dry, and driving conditions are at their best, making the gravel roads easier to navigate. However, dust can reduce visibility, and occasional rains can create slick spots unexpectedly. It’s still wise to travel in a 4×4, which offers better handling and comfort over the bumpy terrain.

Autumn (September – October): As the weather cools, early frosts in the morning can make the gravel roads icy and treacherous, particularly in shaded areas or early in the day. Visibility may also be reduced by fog, adding to the driving challenge. Ensure your vehicle has adequate tires, and consider using headlights even during the day to increase visibility.

Winter (November – March): Winter driving to Haifoss is the most challenging. Snow and ice can cover the gravel roads, making them difficult and sometimes impassable without a proper 4×4 vehicle. Snow plowing is irregular, and you should be prepared for deep snow conditions. Always check the weather forecast and road conditions on road.is before embarking on your journey to avoid getting caught in a storm.

What Is the Best Rental Car for This Trip?

For a trip to Haifoss, we highly recommend renting a 4×4 vehicle, regardless of what time of year you’re visiting. The added traction and stability will make the gravel roads easier to handle and provide a safer, more comfortable driving experience. While a mid-size car might manage the route in good weather, a 4×4 will ensure that you’re prepared for any unexpected conditions.

Do You Have to Hike to Get to Haifoss Iceland?

Yes, you do need to hike to get to Haifoss. However, there are two different options. There’s a viewpoint at the top of the canyon, just a short hike from the parking area, that has panoramic views of Háifoss waterfall and the surrounding area.

This option is easy and suitable for most visitors. The hike to the base of the falls is more challenging but gets you up close and personal with Haifoss. It’s about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) round trip and takes approximately 1-1.5 hours to complete.
